What a great effort from all our young players this weekend! Together we joined forces with Cumbernauld RFC Youth and Mini, to take on Drumpellier Waysiders in some exciting matches, giving our players that vital match experience.
Our youngest players in the P1-P3 age group had a thoroughly fun and muddy time. Testing their handling skills and footwork while diving through rings and dodging poles, they raced through a rugby obstacle course before trying to beat the opposition back to the start line. After some piggy back, wheelbarrow and forward roll races, they moved on to a friendly game of touch rugby, with some excellent touch tackles and tries. To top off the session, they took on each other, then the coaches, in a tug of war battle. Needless to say, the coaches didn't stand a chance.
The P4-P5 group took some time getting to know their new Cumbernauld teammates in a short training session before the match, then played a number of short games, with everyone getting a chance of minutes on the pitch. Some excellent footwork and handling was shown by players from all the clubs, and some very competitive matchplay. For some players, this was their first proper match experience, and they showed a good understanding of the laws of the game, as well as great teamwork. Great to see!
P6-P7 had a daunting task taking on their more experienced opponents, but gave their all and fought hard. With our players getting to practice the breakdown skills they've been learning at training, and some age level appropriate scrummaging, they worked hard to get the ball and get themselves into an attacking position. Against a strong opponent, tries would be hard to come by, but some good teamwork led to a few scores across the line. We were all impressed by the effort shown by all on the pitch, well done.
Thanks go to Cumbernauld RFC for hosting the event, and making all teams feel so welcome. Thanks also to Drumpellier Waysiders for coming along to play a few matches, and all the parents and guardians of all players for bringing them along. Hopefully the first of many.
